The Mixed Martial Artist And The Crack Smoking Mayor

Rob Ford

Rob Ford

We all knew around here Toronto Mayor Rob Ford was in trouble when even dog-loyal right wing newspapers like the Toronto Sun and National Post began — in very modest tones — suggesting that the confirmed crack smoker was probably not a good leader of North America’s fourth biggest city right now.

Through it all, though, there was one acquaintance of Sarah’s who maintained a steadfast if often self-aware and trollish support for the mayor — UFC fighter Claude Patrick.

As such, Sarah talked to Patrick about Ford for Fightland. To read the article go here.

Top 11 Music Videos By Director X: From Drake And Bieber To Nicki And Nelly To ‘Northern Touch’

Drake

Drake

Because we’re notorious and remember that song “Northern Touch” with Rascalz, Checkmate, Kardinal and Thrust, when Sarah was presented with the opportunity to talk to the music video director known as X she jumped at the opportunity.

X has come a long way since churning out MuchMusic/Rap City fodder and nowadays lists folks like Justin Bieber, Drake and The Wanted on his resume.

When Sarah spoke to him they talked about select videos he’s created over the years.

Three Artists Critique MMA Fashion

MMA Shirts

MMA Shirts

Despite being fans of the sport, we here at Risky Fuel loathe one thing about mixed martial arts — the shirts.

The amount of times we’ve burst into laughter at the sight of some tough guy walking to the ring in a shirt with a glittering skull with a snake coming out of the eye sockets, wrapped in chains, surrounded by daggers, in the clawed palm of a dragon (or some similar approximation) has been staggering.

But rather than commit a series of insults about these shirts to print, instead Sarah found three genuine artists and got them to critique some outlandish outfits.

9 Retro Canadian Albums Making A Comeback

Honeymoon Suite

Honeymoon Suite

There was a period in Canadian music long before Arcade Fire were cool and Sum 41 were on Vans Warped and Edgefest was crossing the country… and that was the ’80s.

Truthfully, not a whole lot of good came out of that era, besides maybe Blue Rodeo, The Tragically Hip and, like, The Box or something. It was an era where all the worst stereotypes about major label music manifested themselves in the form of physical product.

As a fascinating archeological exercise, some of the albums from that period are getting re-released. As such I took a look at these albums and compared them to iconic figures from that era. Namely Gowan, Sebastian Bach and Randy Bachman.

Deadmau5 vs. Haunted Houses And Niagara Falls

Deadmau5

Deadmau5

It was only meant to be a cheeky throwaway for Halloween.

Sarah had some stray quotes from her Deadmau5 interview where he lit up on the haunted houses in his hometown of Niagara Falls and said he had to move to Toronto for his music. Some swear words, some zings… that’s it.

The story, though, published in Huffington Post Music Canada, has since become much more.

The mayor of Niagara Falls and local councilors responded in the Welland Tribune. The Niagara Falls Review version of the same story then became a fascinating comment board party.

And in the aftermath of all that came “Deadmau5 Responds To Critics.”

Feel free to read through and comment. Everyone else has…
