Manifesto Supports Toronto’s Hip-Hop Culture

Manifesto

Manifesto

One of the marquee hip-hop events on the Toronto event calendar that isn’t 100 per cent OVO/Drake-ified is the announce fall concert/event series Manifesto.

Manifesto caps each fest with a free concert at Yonge-Dundas Square that matches up-and-coming locals with huge international stars.

I interviewed Manifesto chair Che Kothari in the lead up to this year’s event for Samaritan Mag.

Jazz Cartier’s Very Toronto Album

Jazz Cartier

Jazz Cartier

Drake isn’t the only rapper with a claim to Toronto.

Jazz Cartier, whose excellent debut album Marauding In Paradise is filled with Toronto-isms, is doing a mighty good job of his own to romanticize the 6.

I spoke to him for SOCAN’s Words + Music magazine about the city and how he created his unique cut ‘n’ paste songs.

The Destruction Of 25 Roehampton Avenue

25 Roehampton Avenue.

The destruction of 25 Roehampton Avenue

Midtown Toronto is in the midst of a construction boom. Three of the four corners at epicentral intersection Yonge and Eglinton are in varying degrees of construction and the surrounding neighbourhood has no less than 632 separate mostly-condo development projects in the works.

One such project is happening right now at 25 Roehampton Avenue.

The problem? There’s an existing building currently in the way of progress.

Not for long, though.

Here’s what the dismantling of the 25 building looked like on the afternoon of Monday, April 28…

Drake’s 13 Best Moments Of 2013: Started From January Now We Here

Super Drake

Super Drake

Now that Drake has the marquee OVO Fest and appears to be running the Toronto Raptors it’s just a matter of time until he takes over the whole city like the secondary Batman villain he is.

While we’re waiting for that to happen we can all look back at his very successful 2013, which Sarah carefully summarized in a story for Huffington Post Music Canada.

The Mixed Martial Artist And The Crack Smoking Mayor

Rob Ford

Rob Ford

We all knew around here Toronto Mayor Rob Ford was in trouble when even dog-loyal right wing newspapers like the Toronto Sun and National Post began — in very modest tones — suggesting that the confirmed crack smoker was probably not a good leader of North America’s fourth biggest city right now.

Through it all, though, there was one acquaintance of Sarah’s who maintained a steadfast if often self-aware and trollish support for the mayor — UFC fighter Claude Patrick.

As such, Sarah talked to Patrick about Ford for Fightland. To read the article go here.
