Behind The Music At Toronto Maple Leafs Games

If you’ve been watching the Toronto Maple Leafs this year you’ll know that every time they score a goal a Hall & Oates song blasts through the home rink in celebration.

Getting to be the official goal song for a pro hockey team is a real honour. But just getting on the in-game playlist in any capacity is just as big.

I spoke to the Arkells, The Sheepdogs, USS and the staff at MLSE about what’s involved in having a successful jock jam.

PUP Explore Morbid Stuff

PUP

Toronto punk band PUP have really captured the spirit of the thing with their newest album Morbid Stuff.

An exploration of depression, mental illness, anxiety and all-around existential angst wrapped up in a spiky pop-punk package, it’s a dose of cathartic rage ideal for anyone having trouble navigating this world.

I spoke to the band for a feature story in SOCAN Words & Music magazine.

Kardinal Offishall On The Toronto Raptors’ Magical Run

Kardinal Offishall

Can-rap OG Kardinal Offishall has been supporting hometown NBA team the Toronto Raptors since the beginning and through the lean years, so it’s only fitting now they’re the champs that he also gets to share in a bit of that shine.

I spoke to Kardi about the Raptors and the team’s close connection to the Canadian rap community in a piece for SOCAN Words & Music.

Mother Mother’s Identity Crisis

Mother Mother

Mother Mother

Vancouver alternative-pop band Mother Mother’s newest album No Culture was the result of some deep soul searching.

As the band explained to me in a feature for SOCAN’s Words & Music, the combination of writer’s block and an identity crisis made making the album difficult.

Shaun Frank’s Not So Overnight Success

Shaun Frank

Shaun Frank

One of the biggest songs of 2016 was The Chainsmokers’ “Closer” featuring Halsey.

That song had a northern secret weapon to it — it  was co-written by Canadian Shaun Frank.

Frank’s had a long road from screamo rock band singer to EDM producer/DJ to #1 hitmaker.

He told me all about it in a feature interview for SOCAN’s Words & Music Magazine.
