TIFF 2018: Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma Is A True Film Experience

When Sarah saw director Alfonso Cuarón’s deeply personal Roma at TIFF 2018 she considered a true cinematic experience.

In her review for Consequence Of Sound she wrote, “Cuarón has transformed the influences of his own childhood into a nuanced and reflective chronicle that manages to touch on political upheaval, class inequality, gender inequality, life, and death.”

Arkells Support Hamilton-Area Refugess

Arkells

Arkells

If you’ve been paying attention at all you may have figured out the Arkells have become one of the biggest rock bands in Canada in the last year or so.

They seem to understand that with this great new power they’ve also got great new responsibility.

When they played their big hometown stadium show this past June in Hamilton they also used it as an opportunity to raise funds for Refuge Hamilton Centre for Newcomer Health.

I spoke to lead singer Max Kerman about the reasons why they did this for Samaritanmag.

Actual Real Martial Arts Role Models

GSP

GSP

Every now and then when martial arts is wallowing in a particularly low moment (usually caused by Conor McGregor) Sarah likes to use those times to point out those who support the higher-minded ideals of martial arts.

She recently did so in a piece for Asian World Of Martial Arts where she wrote about a number of positive martial arts role models.

TIFF 2018: Widows Is A Better Kind Of Heist Film

Widows

Widows

While Liam Neeson is in the new film Widows by ace director Steve McQueen it’s important to note that nobody in his family gets kidnapped, requiring him to embark on an elaborate revenge quest.

In fact, Neeson’s quite secondary in Widows, as it focuses on Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez and Elizabeth Debicki, the partners of a failed heist crew who now have to take over where their men left off.

Sarah loved this film when she saw it at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.
