Death Of An iPod And The Comfort In Specific Objects

Recently Sarah’s beloved sixth-generation black 80GB iPod Classic died.

This wasn’t just a loss because of the difficulty in trying to find some new surrogate device, it was a loss because the iPod represented a specific type of comfort object for her.

Sarah explained why in a piece for Vox’s The Goods section.

Lulu Pencil Is Important Freelance Writer Representation

Lulu Pencil

She’s afraid of heights, weak and constantly loses, but Lulu Pencil is one of professional wrestling’s breakout stars of 2019.

The reason, in part, is because Lulu Pencil is actually a working freelance writer who wrestles on the side in Japan’s Gatoh Move promotion. And a creative class wimp who taps out to rest holds and constantly fails speaks to a surprising amount of savvy wrestling fans.

Sarah wrote about Lulu Pencil in a piece for Fanbyte.

Awesome Music Project Uses Feel-Good Stories To Fund Music Therapy

The Awesome Music Project

When the Awesome Music Project Canada: Songs Of Hope And Happiness book was released this fall it had two goals:

a) Share the 111 stories from people across Canada (including famous types like Sarah McLachlan and Theo Fleury) who explained how music deeply affected them.
b) Use money from sales of said book to support music therapy research.

The Awesome Music Project is fast expanding, though, with live events and books in the works.

I spoke to co-creator Terry Stuart about it for Samaritanmag.

TIFF 2019: Dolemite Is My Name Is A Strong Return For Eddie Murphy

Dolemite Is My Name

Eddie Murphy’s tribute to blaxploitation star Rudy Ray Moore in Dolemite Is My Name isn’t just charming, it may spark a full-on renaissance for Murphy.

Murphy’s efforts in Dolemite Is My Name certainly do a good job to remind everyone why Murphy is a really big movie star.

Sarah reviewed the film when it screened at the Toronto International Film Festival for Consequence of Sound.

Tetsuya Naito Is The Ultimate Millennial Hero

Tetsuya Naito

To a certain segment of people — particularly symbolism savvy fans of New Japan Pro Wrestling and the wrestling faction Los Ingobernables de Japon (LIJ) — LIJ leader Tetsuya Naito pretty much represents the struggle.

Naito’s path is a long and complicated one, with high-profile failures, found families and redemptions won in the most unlikely ways. In many respects his journey represents the same twisting, failing, flailing one that so many millennials have experienced.

Sarah explained why Naito resonates so deeply in a piece for Catapult.
