RIP Robert Vaughn, One Of World’s Greatest Actor/Activist/Oddballs

Robert Vaughn

Robert Vaughn

Former television spy and heartthrob actor Robert Vaughn passed away on November 11 at age 83.

His death hit one particular member of the Risky Fuel household (Sarah) very hard.

In her period of mourning after the death of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and The Magnificent Seven star, she wrote an In Memoriam piece about Vaughn for The Establishment.

One of the things Sarah wrote about was Vaughn’s surprising and sometimes dangerous activism.

It seems this fictional spy was quite concerned with saving lives in the real world.

I Don’t Fight Because I’m Violent—I Fight Because The World Is

Fighting

One of the most confounding things people who meet Sarah have trouble figuring out about her is her interest in fighting.

What these people don’t realize is that even though the world mostly sucks, when one is competing in the fighting arts it might also suck, but it’ll (mostly) suck in a way that’s generally fair and generally honourable.

And in a world that isn’t particularly fair or honourable, this is a safe haven.

Sarah wrote about these feelings in a piece called “I Don’t Fight Because I’m Violent—I Fight Because The World Is” for The Establishment.

How To Talk About Martial Arts And Autism

changing-the-way-we-talk-about-autism-in-martial-arts

When 11-year-old Ethan Fineshriber won at the American Taekwondo Association World Expo recently it caused a flood of newspieces.

This, because Fineshriber is autistic.

Sarah’s none too keen on the “inspiration porn” tone of these stories and she explained why in a post for Fightland.

Exploring Captain Power And The Soldiers Of The Future

Captain Power And The Soldiers Of The Future

Captain Power And The Soldiers Of The Future

Back in the late 1980s there was a post-apocalyptic sci fi kids show called Captain Power And The Soldiers Of The Future.

The show had a fascinating merchandise tie-in — the toys could be used to get into “interactive” laser battles with the television program.

The thing about that though: the toys were really expensive and the particularly heavy and dark storyline behind the show weren’t exactly kid-friendly.

Sarah wrote about all this in a new feature for The A.V. Club.
