I was once again employed by the Polaris Music Prize this year leading up to and during 2015 Polaris Gala which was won by Buffy Sainte-Marie for her album Power In The Blood.
Buffy’s as deserving as anyone, but the real ace moments on the night were, for me, in order:
3. Host Fred Penner attempting a song medley highlighting all nine previous Polaris winners, including Tagaq and Godspeed You Black Emperor.
2. Alvvays performing a shimmering “Archie, Marry Me.”
1. Jennifer Castle’s epic rendition of “Sparta” backed by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

The Danish Girl, a film about painter and trans rights pioneer Lile Elbe was not a movie she was impressed by, saying, “Trans people deserve better treament than this.”

She didn’t particularly enjoy this film, saying “Perhaps it’s fitting, in some way, to pay tribute to a prolific artist who died before his 30th birthday with a film filled with wasted potential.”
