Is Black Sabbath Evil Or Good?

Black Sabbath

Black Sabbath

Black Sabbath rolled through Toronto recently and that was a flimsy enough reason for me to contemplate the important question, “Is Black Sabbath evil or good?”

Using a variety of multimedia clips and historical documents I was able to determine that the band is… a little bit of both.

Black Sabbath Guitarist Tony Iommi Diagnosed With Lymphoma

Tony Iommi

Tony Iommi

Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi has been diagnosed lymphoma, a type of cancer involving cells of the immune system.

A statement released by the band this morning said Iommi’s illness was detected in its early stages and asked their fans to send “positive vibes” in the direction of the man behind the riffs for songs like “Iron Man,” “War Pigs” and “Sweat Leaf.”

“With the news that Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi has been diagnosed with the early stages of lymphoma, his bandmates would like everyone to send positive vibes to the guitarist at this time,” said the band. “Iommi is currently working with his doctors to establish the best treatment plan — the ‘IRON MAN’ of Rock & Roll remains upbeat and determined to make a full and successful recovery.”

The news of Iommi’s illness is a blow to the band, as they’re in the midst of recording their first studio album in 33 years with the “classic” Black Sabbath lineup of Ozzy Osbourne (vocals), Tony Iommi (guitar), Geezer Butler (bass) and Bill Ward (drums). Set to be produced by Rick Rubin, recording of the album will now be shifted from Los Angeles to the U.K. to facilitate Iommi’s treatment.

Former Black Sabbath singer Ronnie James Dio died in 2010 due to stomach cancer.

Cancer Bats Become Bat Sabbath, Black Sabbath Cover Band

Cancer Bats

Cancer Bats

The Risky Fuel household thinks Cancer Bats rip pretty hard. We also think Black Sabbath rip pretty hard, too.

So in our minds, the idea of the Cancer Bats doing cover sets as Bat Sabbath, a Black Sabbath cover band, is sort of like a harmonious chocolate-and-peanut butter-type thing.

In fact, Aaron dug the idea so much that he went and interviewed Bat Sabbath/Cancer Bats lead singer Liam Cormier about the whole crazy idea for Hellbound, our friendly metalhead friend website. You can read more about Bat Sabbath by clicking here.

What I Call Music Podcast Is Now Up

What I Call Music

What I Call Music

A couple weeks ago I had the distinct pleasure of sitting down to record a podcast for What I Call Music, the home base for my good friend and one of the most musically knowledgeable cats on the planet, Paul Kehayas.

We ended up talking for a verrrrrrrrrrrrryyy long time, so Paul had one helluva time shrinking it down to something of a dignified length, but for anyone curious I think it’s solidly entertaining. As such, if you’re bored, please give ‘er a listen HERE.

Some of the things we discussed were:

* The origin of the name Risky Fuel.
* Sloan still being credible 20 years later.
* Songs: Ohia/Magnolia Electric Co./Jason Molina.
* How I used to make my own music charts as a kid and my related favourite song of 1988.
* The infamous story of seeing Brian Jonestown Massacre play in a bush at the Wilderbeat Festival during the Blackout of 2003.
* The cultural awareness built by discovering The Clash’s Sandinista album.

The playlist includes: Songs: Ohia, Black Sabbath, Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Clash and Raphael Saadiq.
