The Real Men(?) Behind Madonna’s Vogue

One of Sarah’s favourite adventures during TIFF 2011 was interviewing and hanging around with the cast of Leave It On The Floor (she got along with them so fab that they even gave her a nickname, “Sarbear”). The cast were all super-fabulous members of the “ball scene,” a highly theatrical gay performance subculture probably best known as the place Madonna nicked voguing from.

Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Cher, Madonna… they all owe a debt to the ball scene and you can find out why in Sarah’s story about it for Spinner Canada. To read the story, click here.

Jonathan Demme To Do A Fourth Neil Young Movie

Neil Young

Neil Young

It’s heartening to know that Jonathan Demme, the man who directed The Silence Of The Lambs and Philadelphia, is one of us — a music geek.

Sarah found this out when she interviewed Demme about his latest, and third film about Neil Young, Neil Young Journeys. Demme says he intends to do more films with Young, too, along with whatever other creative projects they can come up with.

Paul Williams! The Rainbow Connection/Muppets Guy!

Rarely has Sarah been as excited for an interview as she was when she got to interview legendary ’70s singer-songwriter Paul Williams while he was in town promoting his film Paul Williams: Still Alive at TIFF 2011.

Williams, the man famously behind The Muppets “The Rainbow Connection” song, was a great interview and the accompanying story Sarah did for Spinner Canada is burning a hole through the internet, so please consider going to read it here (and check out the dizzying comments section).

Because Spinner is RIP you can now read this story here.

Neil Young Goes Sound Nerd At TIFF

When Neil Young and Jonathan Demme debuted their new concert film Neil Young Journeys at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 12 one of the defining characteristics of the whole event was what they did to the theatre they presented it in.

Basically they went super-mega acoustic nerd on the whole thing, adding speakers and tweaking the sound system. Then they talked to the audience about what exactly they did.

Sarah wrote about it for Spinner Canada. You can read the story here.

Madonna Films From Best To Worst

Vintage Madonna

Vintage Madonna

Madonna directed a movie called W.E. which recently screened at TIFF 2011. Sarah saw it and didn’t think all that much of it.

Which was the incentive to write the article Madonna Movies: From Best To Worst for Spinner Canada. You can read about it here.
