Strombo’s Tribute To Tragically Hip Airs New Year’s Day

The Strombo Show

The Strombo Show

While 2016 was a pretty shitty year in a number of ways, 2017 is going to kick off spectacularly when The Strombo Show airs its four-hour tribute special to Gord Downie and The Tragically Hip on New Year’s Day via CBC Radio 2.

The special will feature some of my favourite Canadian bands, people like The Dears, D-Sisive, The Sadies, Daniel Romano and Etiquette, almost 50 acts in total, covering songs by The Hip.

I spoke to host George Stroumboulopoulos about the special for an AUX TV feature story.

The Red Book Diaries of George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight

George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight's Red Book Diaries

George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight’s Red Book Diaries

One of the duties I was tasked with while part of the tenth and final season of George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight was shepherding the Red Book messages George would write at the end of almost every episode of the show.

I was also the person who collected those messages and explained them in more detail on the Strombo.com website.

These messages — which could be movies, TV shows, albums, songs, viral videos, books, articles, acknowledgments… anything really — are well worth deeper exploration. As such, I’ve further compiled them here for anyone who might want to dig into them.

Volume One: Against Me!, Ellen Page, Sherlock

Volume Two: Malcolm X, Glenn Gould, philosoraptor

Volume Three: Lou Gehrig, Less Than Zero, James Brown

Volume Four: Lester Bangs, Kiev drone videos, Mark McMorris

Volume Five: Smart dolphins, noble dogs, howling wolves

Volume Six: Bill Nye, Led Zeppelin, tobogganing maps

Volume Seven: Pete Seeger, Harold Ramis, Phillip Seymour Hoffman

Volume Eight: FUBAR, Joe Carter, Black Power Mixtape

Volume Nine: Redd Foxx, Twin Peaks, SCTV

Volume Ten: Trailer Park Boys, Archer, vampires.

Musical Recommendations On The Strombocast

On the Strombocast

On the Strombocast

Due to the Winter Olympics my employer George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight has been pre-empted or in off-hour reruns for the last week.

This has made the staff a wee bit restless. So to combat that we’ve started doing something called the Strombocast — a sort of news roundup of interesting things that happen each day.

I made an appearance on the February 11 edition, offering up a musical recommendation for George.
