Strombo’s Tribute To Tragically Hip Airs New Year’s Day

The Strombo Show

The Strombo Show

While 2016 was a pretty shitty year in a number of ways, 2017 is going to kick off spectacularly when The Strombo Show airs its four-hour tribute special to Gord Downie and The Tragically Hip on New Year’s Day via CBC Radio 2.

The special will feature some of my favourite Canadian bands, people like The Dears, D-Sisive, The Sadies, Daniel Romano and Etiquette, almost 50 acts in total, covering songs by The Hip.

I spoke to host George Stroumboulopoulos about the special for an AUX TV feature story.

Bitter Sweet Memories Of Bitter Sweet Symphonies On The Strombo Show

George and Aaron on a plane.

George and Aaron on a plane.

Last night I got to take part in a radio segment of The Strombo Show with my friend-boss George Stroumboulopoulos. Despite threatening on social media that the topic for my appearance was alternately going to be a) songs about penis euphemisms, b) pro wrestling entrance theme music, and/or c) a tribute to the time former CFNY DJ Dani Alwell played the 40-minute version of The Orb’s “Blue Room” single, it was actually none of those things.

Mostly we ended up talking about The Verve’s “Bitter Sweet Symphony” and Brit-pop from the early to mid-’90s.
