This Week In Music History — May 20 – 26

John Lennon and Yoko Ono

John Lennon and Yoko Ono

My “This Week In Music History” feature went out again this week over at the Spinner.

Interestingly, it was this very week 33 years ago that John Lennon and Yoko Ono holed up in Montreal to have a bed-in for peace, and to create the song “Give Peace A Chance.” Contrast that to the provincial government trying to clamp down on student protests in Montreal lately. Also, Bobby Dylan was born.

UPDATE: Because AOL Music Blog is RIP this story can now be found in full HERE.

Carrie Underwood‘s mostly known as a perky blonde country singing reality tv superstar, but she also has a not-quite-secret rocker past.

When Sarah interviewed her recently for The Boot Underwood told her that she was all about Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains and Nirvana and had a secret hair metal phase, too.

Rock on, Carrie. \m/

Spinner News Mega-Pack: MMVAs, Maylee Todd, Arcade Fire, Divine Fits, Feist

Arcade Fire red patched with Mick Jagger

Arcade Fire red patched with Mick Jagger

Here’s the latest batch of news stories I’ve done for the Spinner AOL empire:

Disco funk weirdo Maylee Todd gets profiled in a Red Bull documentary.

Feist has re-released her “lost” Monarch: Lay Your Jewelled Head Down album on vinyl.

The MuchMusic Video Awards will feature performances by Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen and Nelly Furtado. In related news, I believe I have been aged out of what used to be the best party of the year.

Divine Fits exist. Which is only a big deal if you really cared about Handsome Furs.

Arcade Fire use Saturday Night Live to show support for Quebec student protests. Fight the power.

When Pop Stars Go Goth (Katy Perry, Madonna, Christina Aguilera)

Katy Perry

Katy Perry

Pretty much every successful musician has a “dark” period, which often results in some of their best music.

For a certain segment of pop starlets, however, their dark periods are more often characterized not by dark music, but by dark clothes.

This phenomenon of pop-ettes “going goth” isn’t a new one and Sarah collected some examples of this game of gloomy dress-up for AOL Music Blog.

Click here to read all about Madonna, Katy Perry and Christina Aguilera‘s “goth” phases.

Florence of the Machine and Katie Stelmanis of Austra

It’s World Goth Day.

Among them: Paramore, Skrillex, Austra, Florence And The Machine and Crystal Castles.
