The Existential Angst Of A Split Decision

the-existential-implications-of-a-split-decision-victory

Competitive combat is supposed to be simple — two people fight, one wins, one loses.

Except, sometimes it’s not that simple.

Sometimes when two people fight someone sorta, maybe, kinda, arguably wins.

Sarah wrote about the existential dread of such wins in a piece for Fightland.

I Don’t Fight Because I’m Violent—I Fight Because The World Is

Fighting

One of the most confounding things people who meet Sarah have trouble figuring out about her is her interest in fighting.

What these people don’t realize is that even though the world mostly sucks, when one is competing in the fighting arts it might also suck, but it’ll (mostly) suck in a way that’s generally fair and generally honourable.

And in a world that isn’t particularly fair or honourable, this is a safe haven.

Sarah wrote about these feelings in a piece called “I Don’t Fight Because I’m Violent—I Fight Because The World Is” for The Establishment.

Kayla Harrison

Kayla Harrison

When U.S. judo fighter Kayla Harrison won the gold medal at this year’s Olympics there were a number of publications who were quick to suggest that she could be the next Ronda Rousey — a decorated judo competitor who transitioned to mixed martial arts.

Harrison isn’t quite sold on the idea, though, and she’s got some good reasons why.

Sarah wrote about them for Fightland.

Kung Fu Nuns Fight Human Trafficking

Kung fu nuns

Kung fu nuns

The Drukpa Lineage nuns from a Himalayan Buddhist order have been getting a lot of attention in recent months for a campaign where they’ve been cycling across the Himalayas to raise awareness about and to combat human trafficking.

These same cycling nuns, 500 or so strong, also happen to be regular, avid kung fu participants.

Sarah wrote about them for Asian World Of Martial Arts.
