Demolition

Sarah was on assignment covering the 2015 Toronto Film Festival this year for Consequence Of Sound.

Demolition, Jake Gyllenhaal’s new art film about a man’s troubled spiral after his wife’s death, is about ” throwing broken people into the strangest possible circumstances and letting catharsis show up when it feels like it.”

Edith Garrud: Suffragette Martial Artist

Edith Garrud

Edith Garrud

One of the great assets the suffragette movement had in the early 1900s was a female jiu-jitsu instructor by the name of Edith Garrud.

Garrud’s contribution to the movement was to teach suffragettes practical self-defense tips in the face of hostile, violent men.

Sarah wrote about Garrud for Fightland.

D.O.A. Still Fighting The System

D.O.A.

D.O.A.

It does my heart good to know that a band like first generation hardcore punks D.O.A. are still out there doing their thing hatin’ on the government, supporting marijuana, still telling the world disco sucks, etc.

The band rolled into Toronto’s Riotfest awhile back while made for a plausible excuse for me to talk to the band’s figurehead Joey “Shithead” Keithley about politics, protest rock, the kids today and all sorts of related acts of rebellion.

Cher Supports Nick Diaz

Cher

Cher

Controversial mixed martial arts fighter Nick Diaz was recently suspended from fighting for five years by the Nevada State Athletic Comission because he smoked pot.

This sentence, especially relative to not nearly so severe sentences the Commission hands out for using performance enhancers, is one of the great injustices in the sports world right now.

So great is its offense that even pop star Cher has weighed in on the scandal. She’s pro-Diaz.
