10 Anti-Stephen Harper Songs

Blue Rodeo

Blue Rodeo

A few days before the Canadian federal election Sarah was commissioned to find a bunch of anti-Stephen Harper songs.

It wasn’t difficult.

After all, relatively mainstream acts like Blue Rodeo and Yukon Blonde had weighed in with their own related protest tunes.

Anyway, we’re pretty sure this list is the main reason why Harper lost to Justin Trudeau in the election.

Garrett “G Money” Holeve

Garrett “G Money” Holeve

Garrett “G Money” Holeve, a martial artist with down syndrome, wanted to participate in a professional fight.

Some officiating bodies not so into a person’s self-determination didn’t want him to.

The result was a different sort of fight… for one’s rights.

Justin Trudeau Once Punched Out A Conservative Senator

Prime Minister/fighter Justin Trudeau

Prime Minister/fighter Justin Trudeau

Back in 2012 newly elected Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau scored a solid TKO victory in a boxing match versus Conservative Senator Patrick Brazeau.

That match, posits one academic paper, transformed the image of Trudeau from dandy flop into a capable tough guy.

Sarah wrote about the rise of the punching prime minister for Fightland.

D.O.A. Still Fighting The System

D.O.A.

D.O.A.

It does my heart good to know that a band like first generation hardcore punks D.O.A. are still out there doing their thing hatin’ on the government, supporting marijuana, still telling the world disco sucks, etc.

The band rolled into Toronto’s Riotfest awhile back while made for a plausible excuse for me to talk to the band’s figurehead Joey “Shithead” Keithley about politics, protest rock, the kids today and all sorts of related acts of rebellion.

TIFF 2015: Where To Invade Next

Where To Invade Next

Where To Invade Next

Sarah was on assignment covering the 2015 Toronto Film Festival this year for Consequence Of Sound.

Michael Moore’s new return-to-form film Where To Invade Next premiered at the fest and it was “a very good op-ed in favor of America’s ability to live up to its potential and build itself into a country that actually represents the idea of liberty and equality that it’s espoused for so long.”
