Concert Censorship: A Brief History Of ‘The Man’ Trying To Shut Down The Rock

Religious protesters want Lady Gaga to go to hell

Religious protesters want Lady Gaga to go to hell

On any given day, in any town or city, anywhere in the world, there’s probably some crackdown/protest/sinister bullshit happening that’s attempting to prevent people from rockin’ and dancin’.

Basically, the people behind these crackdowns hate music and they hate life and they’re assholes.

Anyway, in lieu of the latest round of anti-Lady Gaga protests in the Philippines and such, Sarah was tasked to find other examples of The Man cracking down on rock ‘n’ roll.

It turns out there were no shortage of examples, from Elvis Presley to Eminem to The Beatles to you name it. Basically, the government is afraid of musicians.

Tragically Hip On Canada Day: Gord Downie’s The Nation’s Weird Uncle

Tragically Hip's Gord Downie

Tragically Hip’s Gord Downie

UPDATE: Because Spinner is RIP we’ve unearthed this story at this link.

The Tragically Hip‘s big Canada Day show this year took place at Burl’s Creek in Oro, Ontario.

The giant campsite played host to the Hip, Death Cab For Cutie, The New Pornographers and the Rural Alberta Advantage.

The one thing Sarah and I couldn’t get over when we were watching Gord Downie and the rest of the Hip perform was how effortlessly Downie has helped be sort of like a guiding hand for the less art intuitive.

What he represents is a gateway drug pusher for Canadian art, like that uncle who gives you a joint for graduating high school.

As such, Sarah wrote about it, and I took pictures of it, for Spinner.

MMVA 2012: Carly Rae Jepsen Day

Carly Rae Jepsen and Katy Perry at the MMVAs

Carly Rae Jepsen and Katy Perry at the MMVAs

Sarah was assigned to cover the 2012 MuchMusic Video Awards on Sunday for AOL Music Blog.

This was mostly fine because it was basically a Carly Rae Jepsen coming out party and she’s relatively onside for the CRJ.

She was somewhat less onside for the latest crop of Much VJs (who are these people?), but whatcha gonna do? MuchMusic is firmly demographic television these days.

Flaming Lips, Of Montreal, Art vs. Science Rule NXNE Yonge-Dundas Show

Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne

Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne

Spinner’s giant free NXNE 2012 show at Yonge-Dundas Square certainly was something. Ten bands, over 20,000 people, and I wrote about it all hiding behind a garbage bin in the VIP area.

Headliners The Flaming Lips were awesome, even though they were on a bit of a heavy trip because of that Radiohead stage collapse thing. Of Montreal were a pretty great time, too, what with the costumes and all. So were Hollerado. But the real revelation for me were Art vs. Science, a dance-rock band from Australia. They were truly ridiculous in their silver spacesuits and their songs and showmanship made for one super-max party.

To read about those bands, as well as Portugal. The Man, Brasstronaut and more, click here.
