Masonic Temple Concert Venue In Toronto Closing

Audience at Rock Pile For Led Zeppelin

Audience at Rock Pile For Led Zeppelin

One of Toronto’s best concert venues, the Masonic Temple, is set to close because giant corporate owners Bell Media don’t really need it anymore.

The venue is 95 years old and has been hosting music events since the 1930s under various names like the Rock Pile and the Concert Hall.

There’s no word on what the building will become, but because this is Toronto and because developers are assholes, we’re betting on condos.

Who’s Billy Ray Cyrus Voting For In The U.S. Election?

Billy Ray Cyrus

Billy Ray Cyrus

A couple weeks ago Team Risky Fuel attended a secret Billy Ray Cyrus show at Toronto’s Rivoli club with 100 or so other people. That’s not some bizarre humblebrag so much as it’s a setup to explain why: Sarah interviewed the country singer for Huffington Post Music Canda — that’s why.

During their interview they talked some politics — it’s a thing right now — and Cyrus explained how he had done things for both the Democrats and Republicans in the past. Then he dangled that this week he was going to declare who he was supporting in the election. It turns out that’s going to be Obama.

Also, yes, he played “Achy Breaky Heart” at the show.

Tragically Hip’s Kensington Market Takeover: Complete With A ‘Weird’ Interview

The Tragically Hip at Kensington Market

The Tragically Hip at Kensington Market

UPDATE: Because Spinner is RIP, Sarah’s full interview with The Hip can be found here.

To celebrate the release of The Tragically Hip‘s newest album Now For Plan A the band recently took over Toronto’s boho Kensington Market neighbourhood for multiple days worth of free mini concerts, interviews and autograph sessions.

Sarah went down to experience the unique event and also interview the band. The resulting interview was, well, “weird,” devolving into a lengthy discussion on how the mess on old Russian hockey nets makes for more exciting goal scoring than with the antiseptic nets used these days. Yeah. Blame Gord Downie.

To read the story head over to Spinner by clicking here.

Also, for added Hip-ness, I did a dangle piece for Gord Downie‘s appearance on George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight over at Huffington Post Music Canada. That’s worth tracking down too because Gord says some heavy stuff.

Triumph’s Triumphant(ish) Reunion That Almost Didn’t Happen

Triumph Live At Sweden Rock Festival

Triumph Live At Sweden Rock Festival

UPDATE: The full story of Triumph’s Sweden reunion can now be found HERE.

The first rock concert I ever attended by choice was Triumph at Maple Leaf Gardens somewhere around 1984 for the Thunder Seven tour (there was a Sha Na Na concert before that when I was a kid, but it doesn’t count because an aunt made me go). I never saw them after that because they put out The Sport of Kings album (poop) and then basically dissolved.

A few years back, however, the band made their first furtive attempts at a reunion, mainly by playing a big one-off gig in Sweden.

That gig was recorded and videotaped and has become the CD/DVD release Live At Sweden Rock Festival.

I spoke to band bassist Mike Levine about the reunion on behalf of Noisecreep and the results can be found in two separate feature stories.

The first, found HERE, is about how the actual Sweden reunion show almost didn’t happen.

The second, found HERE, takes a look at where the band are at right now, if they are actually ever going to tour again, and compares them to peers like Journey and Foreigner.

Fucked Up Knew They Wouldn’t Win The Polaris

Fucked Up

Fucked Up

Now that the 2012 Polaris Music Prize has been decided it was pretty clear from my interview with past champ and ’12 nominee Damian Abraham from Fucked Up that he was right when he said his band had no chance of winning for a second time.

Because they didn’t win for a second time.
