The Pizza Cones Of The Mad Italian

the exact same ingredients that would make up a slice

The Pizza Cone of The Mad Italian

I’m a sucker for novelty foods like deep fried butter and Krispy Kreme Hamburgers and such. So when I found out that a place called The Mad Italian (1581 Bayview Avenue, Toronto) was selling something called the Zazzu (a zinged up name for pizza in a cone) it was an inevitable destination. And today was the day.

I ordered the Mediterranea ($5.49) which featured mozzarella and parmesan cheeses with black olives, mushrooms, red peppers and tomato sauce topped with goat cheese. It was exactly what I was hoping for in all the right ways.

At $5.49 the zazzu is more expensive than a boutique slice at a regular pizza joint, but the extra care is evident. For one, the actual cone is a marvel of food engineering. It’s not actually a cone so much as it’s cylindrified pizza dough with the ingredients poured into it like a cement casing. While that sounds simple enough, it’s probably a relatively exacting process to get right. And get it right they did.

Where the zazzu succeeds over a normal pizza slice is in the insides. The exact same ingredients that would make up a slice somehow combine more effectively in cone form. What you get is this thick slurry of cheese and sauce with little vegetable lumps that hold their form just well enough as to not be messy or dribbly.

That’s the best thing about the zazzu. Even the though the whole gimmick is about the “cone,” when you’re eating it the cone’s actually an afterthought. The gutty, tasty foodball that’s inside the cone is more in-focus than with a normal slice. It’s like if you ordered a pizza then took a fork and started raking it across the whole pie and shoveled whatever you drag-netted into your mouth. And that equals good times.

Thumbs up, pizza cones.

Alternative Then And Now: Current Bands And Their Descendents

Pearl Jam and Arcade Fire

Pearl Jam and Arcade Fire

Everything old is new again. Or something like that. And everything in music has been done before.

And if you’ve got a big enough record collection, you can actually trace the genelogical lines between artists a couple decades remove. Which is exactly what Aaron did in an article called Alt-Rock Then And Now: Connecting The Classes Of 1992 And 2012.

The story is exactly what it sounds like. Massive Attack were compared to The Weeknd, Pearl Jam to Arcade Fire, Jesus And Mary Chain to Crocodiles, etc., etc.

Six Extremely Detailed Descriptions Of Rock Musicals We’d Like To See

Scenes From American Idiot, The Musical

Scenes From American Idiot, The Musical

There’s been a lot of talk in the Risky Fuel household over the years about things like Pippin, Cabaret, and Hair. All of it by Sarah.

She’s moderately obsessed with musicals and has crafted a number of fake ones in her head. It would seem the enablers at AUX TV thought it would be cute to set her loose and reveal some of these ideas. The result: storylines for musicals about Bon Jovi, Arcade Fire, Rush, The Dandy Warhols and Brian Jonestown Massacre, Joel Plaskett, and the topper, a gay love triangle called Heavy Metal: The Musical set to Judas Priest songs.

How Kidz Bop De-Pervertizes Katy Perry Lyrics

Kidz Bop 21 is free of ANYTHING that would scare your kids

Kidz Bop 21 is free of ANYTHING that would scare your kids

There’s a thing called the Kidz Bop series and it’s a really big deal. Basically, producers get a bunch of next generation Disney kids together and they sing reworked versions of popular Top 40 radio hits with all the sex, drugs, violence, innuendo, negativity, religion, and any other potentially controversial language smoothed out of the songs and usually replaced with the words “dance” or “dance, yeah!”

Sarah spent an unnaturally long time listening to the kidz-ified versions of songs by LMFAO, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Maroon 5, Rihanna and a pile of others on the recently released Kidz Bop 21. She then compared the kidz versions to the originals to find out how youth-friendly they’ve been made.

People Who’ve Bombed On Saturday Night Live Besides Lana Del Rey

http://blog.music.aol.ca/2012/01/17/saturday-night-live-snl-lana-del-rey/

Kesha, Lana Del Rey and Coldplay

The internet is still reeling in shock that their new two-hit queen Lana Del Rey is, well, an imperfect performer.

The wannabe ’70s lounge kitten rather incapably ran through her songs “Video Games” and “Blue Jeans” on Saturday Night Live last week, leading to all sorts of hatin’ and internet backlash. It was all quite satisfying for Sarah, who had stamped her with the don’t-believe-the-hype tag early on, but it got her thinking, “Who else has super-bombed on Saturday Night Live?”

She hunted them out — folks like Kesha, Coldplay, Sinead O’Connor, Cypress Hill, Frank Zappa, Britney Spears and Ashlee Simpson—  and wrote a story about it for the AOL Music Blog. You can read it by clicking here.
