How Jared Keeso Almost Ruined The Don Cherry Movie

Jared Keeso in Letterkenny

Jared Keeso in Letterkenny

“How’re ye now?”

This simple phrase is both a greeting and secret code to identify devotees of the best Canadian show on television, Letterkenny.

In an alternate universe Letterkenny star and co-creator Jared Keeso might have never gotten to make his smalltown comedy about brawling and social cliques. That’s because a few years ago he got into a bigtown brawl that could have jeopardized his filming of a Don Cherry film as well as his career.

This winding exposition will all make sense if you head over to Fightland to read the interview Keeso did with Sarah about the punch-up in question.

‘Migrant Dreams’ Explores Canada’s Temporary Foreign Workers Program

Ontario greenhouses

Ontario greenhouses

For all the rah-rah about how well it treats its citizens, provides a safety net for the less fortunate and supports refugees and immigrants, there’s a semi-secret underclass Canadians should be ashamed about the way they’re treated — temporary foreign workers.

Brought in to Canada on restrictive short term contracts to do farming, manual labour and “jobs Canadians won’t do,” temporary workers are often exploited in this country.

A recent documentary about this subject called Migrant Dreams explores this subject in depth.

I spoke to director Min Sook Lee about it for Samaritan Mag.

Jeet Kune Do’s Influence On Hollywood

Trainer Yip Man with Bruce Lee

Trainer Yip Man with Bruce Lee

When Bruce Lee began teaching Hollywood actors his brand of the martial art Jeet Kune Do there was no way he could have predicted that it would still be a popular form of training today.

And yet, it is.

Sarah wrote about the martial arts form’s continued relevance in a piece for Asian World Of Martial Arts.
