Gandhi’s Relationship With Martial Arts

Gandi

Gandi

What started out as mostly an excuse to talk about the cartoon Clone High turn into an interesting lookback when Sarah wrote about Gandhi’s relationship to martial arts for Fightland.

For a pacifist, Gandhi had at least an observer’s understanding of early jiu jitsu.

What he learned from it, though, was perhaps more political than physical.

Boy Meets Girl’s Michelle Hendley Was Boldly Cast

Boy Meets Girl

Boy Meets Girl

The new film Boy Meets Girl has a novel (and probably necessary) casting decision. In the film the trans character Ricky is — a rarity — actually played by a trans person, Michelle Hendley.

Hendley was also a nearly raw rookie when they were recruited for the film. Which made the casting decision even more bold.

Sarah talked to Michelle Hendley about the film for Consequence Of Sound.

Krispy Kreme doughnuts on the production line

Today was National Doughnut Day, which in itself is a cause for celebration.

But the day was made even better because Krispy Kreme Canada was giving away free doughnuts at their stores.

Because free doughnuts are amazing I spoke to Krispy Kreme’s Kelcey Hamaker about why they were doing it.

Giving out doughnuts has an origin that goes back almost a hundred years.

Steven Seagal And Vladimir Putin’s Bromance

Steven Seagal and Vladimir Putin

Steven Seagal and Vladimir Putin

In the “things that are vaguely unusual” department, past-dated action star Steven Seagal and Russian leader-for-life Vladimir Putin are apparently friends based on their mutual appreciation and (legit) martial arts skills.

Because this is a fascinating pairing Sarah wrote a bit about their history for Fightland.

China’s Influence On Hollywood Put In Perspective

Iron Man 3

Iron Man 3

So there’s a big new cultural bogeyman looming over Hollywood right now and its name is “China.”

Apparently when China is involved in funding gigantic movies they want a certain amount of editorial … consideration.

Some people think this is crazy, wackadoodle, end-of-civilization stuff.

Sarah explained how in a new column for Consequence Of Sound this has been going on forever and it’s not that big a deal.
