Bill Priddle of Treble Charger

Bill Priddle of Treble Charger

Unless you hate music you’ve probably figured out there are a lot of bands from the ’90s and early 2000s reuniting.

Pretty much every big British band (except The Smiths is doing it) — Blur, Jesus And Mary Chain, The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays.

The same thing’s happening in Canada where the likes of Headstones, Change Of Heart, The Grapes Of Wrath, Thrush Hermit, The Watchmen, Eric’s Trip, Big Sugar, hHead, I Mother Earth, The Doughboys, King Cobb Steelie, Rusty, The Tea Party and Raggadeth are just a sample of the bands that have gotten back together in some form or another.

With that in mind Maclean’s sent Aaron off to figure out what the deal was. He ended up interviewing Treble Charger, Big Wreck, The Inbreds, Econoline Crush and Mystery Machine and the resulting story can be read here.

Does U2 Still Matter?

U2

U2

A couple months ago the band U2 came to Toronto and were going on about their slide into irrelevance. Bono talked about it happening, but we were wondering if it was mathematically true. So Aaron went and polled 50 of his music industry acquaintances and asked them, “Are U2 still musically relevant?” And if they answered no, then he asked them what album it was that made them decide to no longer follow.

The results of said poll can be read, complete with a vibrant series of arguments in the comments section, over at Maclean’s by clicking here.

In the meantime, Aaron would like to thank the following people:

The Lost Feist Album

Leslie Feist in 1999

Leslie Feist in 1999

There’s a “lost,” near mythical Feist album called Monarch that the singer put out in 1999 and has promptly ignored for the rest of her career.

Part of the mystery is the fact that it’s a good album, so why keep it hidden? We don’t know the answer, but Aaron wrote about this lost album for Maclean’s.

You can read about it here.

Setting The Polaris Music Prize Odds For Maclean’s

The album covers of the 10 short list Polaris albums

The album covers of the 10 short list Polaris albums

For the past couple years Aaron’s done a pretty good job of predicting who’d win the prestigious Polaris Music Prize, correctly picking Fucked Up to win in 2009 and almost getting Karkwa’s win right in 2010 if he didn’t go with his heart and rank The Besnard Lakes higher than them.

With that track record in mind, Maclean’s asked him to lay down the odds on who’s going to win this year’s Polaris, which is being decided Sept. 19 in Toronto. To read about who he thinks will win, click here.
