Matthew Good Signs To Frostbyte/eOne + His Opinion On Lana Del Rey

Veteran multiple Juno Award-winning Canadian rocker Matthew Good has just signed a worldwide record deal with Frostbyte Media/eOne.

I know this because he told me so in an interview for a story that ran on Spinner.

In news completely unrelated to his new status as a citizen of the world, he also told me he loves Lana Del Rey‘s “Video Games” song.

“Let’s face it,” said Good. “Maybe the greatest penis euphemism of the last decade has been ‘Video Games’ by Lana Del Rey, because if you read into that song she’s talking about blowjobs. The whole joystick, video games thing? C’mon?

“I think, that song is one of the best songs I’ve heard in years. Like, it’s awesome. The actual ‘Born to Die’ song, I’m not a fan of that, but that ‘Video Games’ tune is fucking stellar. ‘Blue Jeans,’ that’s good too. When I heard ‘Video Games’ I saw that video that she did and I was just like, goddamn.”

http://blog.music.aol.ca/2012/04/04/songs-about-objects/

Rihanna, clearly airbrushed

Some musicians write about love and others write about politics. Then there are those who write about things. As in stuff, trinkets, baubles, items, junk, bits… y’know, stuff.

Sarah tracked down a bunch of the best for the AOL Music Blog. Amongst them: Weezer, Rihanna, Toby Keith and Kanye West.

Stupid Jokes I Made About Lana Del Rey and Madonna Tonight

I have a cold, so I stayed home and stuck wads of toilet paper up my nose while Aaron went out into the world, played hockey, saw other people and acted like a functional human being. About an hour into my quarantine, I started to get really bored. I turned to social media for amusement, and then I made some dumb jokes in an effort to get people to pay attention to my sad, sickly ass.

First, I compared Lana Del Rey and her unique(?) stage presence to SCTV’s Perry Como skit. It’s uncanny!

Then I came up with the following equation to explain Madonna’s new video:

People Who’ve Bombed On Saturday Night Live Besides Lana Del Rey

http://blog.music.aol.ca/2012/01/17/saturday-night-live-snl-lana-del-rey/

Kesha, Lana Del Rey and Coldplay

The internet is still reeling in shock that their new two-hit queen Lana Del Rey is, well, an imperfect performer.

The wannabe ’70s lounge kitten rather incapably ran through her songs “Video Games” and “Blue Jeans” on Saturday Night Live last week, leading to all sorts of hatin’ and internet backlash. It was all quite satisfying for Sarah, who had stamped her with the don’t-believe-the-hype tag early on, but it got her thinking, “Who else has super-bombed on Saturday Night Live?”

She hunted them out — folks like Kesha, Coldplay, Sinead O’Connor, Cypress Hill, Frank Zappa, Britney Spears and Ashlee Simpson—  and wrote a story about it for the AOL Music Blog. You can read it by clicking here.

My Women Of 2011 Mixtape Contains Zero Artists Who Performed At The Last Lilith Fair

PJ Harvey

PJ Harvey

I just made an awesome mixed CD which I’ll be leaning on during my Christmas Tour Around Ontario 2011™ over the next few days.

The theme for this disc was “Women Of 2011,” as in a compilation of songs from female-fronted artists I dug this year. Looking over the list, it dawned on me that although many of them are emerging as the voices of this generation, none of them played last year’s dismal Lilith Fair.

Now either these artists were too cool to do Lilith, or they weren’t asked. Either way, what I’m taking from it all is that by dodging that lameness bullet they’re all even more amazing.

Here’s my mix:

PJ Harvey “In The Dark Places”
Lana Del Rey “Blue Jeans”
Florence And The Machine “What The Water Gave Me”
Feist  “Undiscovered First”
Cat’s Eyes “Face In The Crowd”
Tasseomancy “Diana”
Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi “Season’s Trees”
Austra “The Beast”
Lykke Li “Jerome”
Tennis “Seafarer”
My Brightest Diamond “Feeling Good”
Lindi Ortega “Little Red Boots”
Neko Case “The Pharoahs”
Nicole Atkins & The Black Sea “The Tower”
Anna Calvi “The Devil”
Chelsea Wolfe “PALE ON PALE”
