This Week In Music History: June 24 – 30

Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson

My “This Week In Music History” feature went out again this week over at the Spinner.

The big news is that Michael Jackson died this week. I know, it’s a tragedy. In other stuff, Wham! played their last show, Beyonce went solo, and a bunch of people got trampled in mud and died during a Pearl Jam performance.

Rihanna, clearly airbrushed

Some musicians write about love and others write about politics. Then there are those who write about things. As in stuff, trinkets, baubles, items, junk, bits… y’know, stuff.

Sarah tracked down a bunch of the best for the AOL Music Blog. Amongst them: Weezer, Rihanna, Toby Keith and Kanye West.

Pop Stars Not-So-Secret Alter-Egos

Katy Perry and Kathy Terry

Katy Perry and Kathy Terry

David Bowie is the Thin White Duke, Aladdin Sane, Ziggy Stardust and about six other art-crafted personalities. This got Sarah thinking about who some of the pop’s current multiple personality disorder artists might be.

On that list: Beyonce, Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj. To read the story about it, head on over to the AOL Music Blog.

The Real Men(?) Behind Madonna’s Vogue

One of Sarah’s favourite adventures during TIFF 2011 was interviewing and hanging around with the cast of Leave It On The Floor (she got along with them so fab that they even gave her a nickname, “Sarbear”). The cast were all super-fabulous members of the “ball scene,” a highly theatrical gay performance subculture probably best known as the place Madonna nicked voguing from.

Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Cher, Madonna… they all owe a debt to the ball scene and you can find out why in Sarah’s story about it for Spinner Canada. To read the story, click here.
