9 Unlikely Contenders For The Polaris Heritage Prize

Bob and Doug MacKenzie

Bob and Doug MacKenzie

My friends and employers at the Polaris Music Prize have introduced a new award — the Slaight Family Polaris Heritage Prize — designed to honour Canadian classic albums from the before Polaris existed. Think of it as a legacy award.

Knowing my peers, I know they’ll nominate a lot of wonderful, timeless albums for Heritage Prize consideration. Also knowing my peers, I know there are certain types of albums — the weird, the crude, the hilarious — that they may not take seriously enough to consider nomination-worthy.

I fixed that problem for them.

To read how, head over to Aux to take a look at the list of unlikely Heritage Prize contenders I compiled.

I Saw $400 Worth Of Concerts Thanks To Ontario Taxpayers

The TORONTO sign as part of Panamania.

The TORONTO sign as part of Panamania.

As a person who a) appreciates high-level athleticism, but b) also understand that many international sporting organizations are amoral-to-outright evil, I knew that when the Pan Am Games came to Toronto this summer that regular citizens like myself would to a certain degree be fucked.

After all, I’m not part of some overtures-covered, politically-connected contractor circle jerk, so none of that grift was going to come my way.

Instead, knowing that as an Ontario taxpayer I was paying for this shit, I was going to have to earn back its value the hard way… by extracting personal entertainment from the whole thing.

Which is exactly what I did to the tune of about $400, mostly in the form of checking out the free Panamania concert schedule.

I explained all about how I came up with this number in a math-y article for AUX.

Limblifter’s ‘Pacific Milk’ And Honey

Limblifter

Limblifter

Can-alternative survivors Limblifter have a new album out called Pacific Milk.

This was a good enough reason for Sarah to get in touch with band leader Ryan Dahle to talk about the old days, the new days and the inbetween days for the ’90s rockers.

The Trailer Park Boys’ Guide To Music

Trailer Park Boys

Trailer Park Boys

While you weren’t paying attention, Bubbles, Julian and Ricky, the reprobates that make up the Trailer Park Boys, have gone international.

Thanks to a new deal with Netflix for multiple seasons and a cussin’ movie called SwearNet the boys are poised to critical mass. That, or at least get the opportunity to get drunk and stoned in strange places.

With this in mind I had the opportunity to talk about music with the Boys for AUX. Some of the topics covered: Rush, Loverboy, Shania Twain and the trailer park hip-hop genre.

Not included in the interview: my attempts to get them to compare Joel Plaskett to Groot.

Damain Abraham from Fucked Up

Damain Abraham from Fucked Up

Damian Abraham from adventurous hardcore band Fucked Up really like pro wrestling.

He also really looks like a pro wrestler.

So much so, in fact, that I was able to make a list of 10 pro wrestlers who look like Damian for AUX TV.

9 Retro Canadian Albums Making A Comeback

Honeymoon Suite

Honeymoon Suite

There was a period in Canadian music long before Arcade Fire were cool and Sum 41 were on Vans Warped and Edgefest was crossing the country… and that was the ’80s.

Truthfully, not a whole lot of good came out of that era, besides maybe Blue Rodeo, The Tragically Hip and, like, The Box or something. It was an era where all the worst stereotypes about major label music manifested themselves in the form of physical product.

As a fascinating archeological exercise, some of the albums from that period are getting re-released. As such I took a look at these albums and compared them to iconic figures from that era. Namely Gowan, Sebastian Bach and Randy Bachman.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor Win Polaris Prize

Godspeed You! Black album cover

Godspeed You! Black album cover

By now most good musicos are aware that Godspeed You! Black Emperor won the 2013 Polaris Music Prize.

We also know how that turned out.

What folks don’t know is that because of a combination of indifference, content hoarding and a dismal sense of history on the part of previous Polaris Gala broadcasters, this is the first time you can actually go back and watch the full awards show broadcast without worrying about it disappearing from the internet.

So please go back and watch the telecast via Aux TV if you haven’t. I was responsible for writing a solid seven per cent of the dialogue that came out of co-hosts Kathleen Edwards and Shad’s mouths.
