Flaming Lips, Of Montreal, Art vs. Science Rule NXNE Yonge-Dundas Show

Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne

Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne

Spinner’s giant free NXNE 2012 show at Yonge-Dundas Square certainly was something. Ten bands, over 20,000 people, and I wrote about it all hiding behind a garbage bin in the VIP area.

Headliners The Flaming Lips were awesome, even though they were on a bit of a heavy trip because of that Radiohead stage collapse thing. Of Montreal were a pretty great time, too, what with the costumes and all. So were Hollerado. But the real revelation for me were Art vs. Science, a dance-rock band from Australia. They were truly ridiculous in their silver spacesuits and their songs and showmanship made for one super-max party.

Hollerado Talk About All Their Videos (And Insane Ostriches) In One Place

Hollerado are a great band. They also make great videos.

In the lead up to NXNE I talked to them about five of their best — “Americanarama,” “Fake Drugs,” “Got To Lose,” “Juliette” and their insaneballs ostrich adventure latest, “Good Day At The Races.”

Polaris People For The Week Of June 15 (With Bonus Long List Fast Facts and Japandroids)

Kathleen Edwards

The 40 records that make up the 2012 Polaris Music Prize Long List got announced last week. It’s a fun time because this now gives music nerds something to argue about. It also gives me new material to write about in my Polaris People column.

Speaking of which, the latest edition of the Polaris Music Prize weekly news roundup is now online.

In it there’s stuff about Japandroids, socionics as they relate to Broken Social Scene, and the travesty that is Carly Rae Jepsen not making the Long List.

Go read the story over at Polaris Music Prize by clicking here.

Oh, and if you want to really dork out, check out the Polaris Prize fast facts I compiled about this year’s Long List.

The Connection Between Twin Peaks And Contemporary Music

Metric are on the cover of AUX magazine's first issue

Metric are on the cover of AUX magazine’s first issue

The folks at AUX have launched a fancy new iPad magazine that you can cop by clicking through to the iTunes store here.

There’s all kinds of quality stuff in there, including a pretty in-depth story by Sarah about bands who’ve been affected by David Lynch‘s mind-melting ’90s television series, Twin Peaks.

Bands like Cults and Silent Drape Runners give their take on where to find a great cup of coffee.

10 Greatest/Weirdest Moments In Flaming Lips History

Flaming Lips

Flaming Lips

If you live near Toronto and like music you’ve no doubt heard about The Flaming Lips doing a free concert at Yonge-Dundas Square on June 16.

In honour of said concert I dove deep into the technicolour wig-out tripping balls-space that is the history of The Flaming Lips and emerged with a story:

Ten of the greatest/weirdest moments in Flaming Lips history.

There’s human skull usb-drive 24 hour songs, appearances at The Peach Pit, nudity and a whole lot more.
