This Week In Music History: December 23 – 29

James Brown & Creed's Scott Stapp

James Brown & Creed’s Scott Stapp

My “This Week In Music History” feature went out again this week over at the Spinner.

This edition was all about considering the difference between a good showman and a bad one. For example, James Brown = good showman, Creed‘s Scott Stapp, while whacked out on pills and whatever = bad showman. Unfortunately for Brown, this particular edition of History isn’t about his hard-working show.

The Dears Look To The Future

The Dears

The Dears

The Dears, one of Risky Fuel HQ’s favourite bands, have spent the last year or so in a sort of cataloguing phase, having the book The Dears: Lost In The Plot written about them, then releasing the documentary film/live album combo Never Destroy Us: Live At Pasaguero about their history.

After all that lead singer Murray Lightburn told Sarah, amongst other things, that for 2013 the band are done looking backwards. It’ll be all about doing new stuff from here on out.

Sarah McLachlan Talks About Bill Clinton, Charity And Those Weepy Animal PSAs

Sarah McLachlan

Sarah McLachlan

Sarah McLachlan likes to do good things for the world and because it’s do-good-things season our Sarah spoke to her about some of those things.

The double Ss talked about McLachlan getting Bill Clinton to make an appearance for her right in the middle of the U.S. election run, her music school’s charity single, and those ASPCA commercials she does that have those sad puppies you want to adopt.

Elton John and Bill Haley

Elton John and Bill Haley

My “This Week In Music History” feature went out again this week over at the Spinner.

This edition had a fancy “trailblazers” theme which highlighted vanguard-y stuff by Elton John, Bill Haley, Run DMC and Swedish House Mafia.

Polaris People For The Week Of December 21 (Weeknd! Grimes! Kathleen Edwards!)

Grimes

Grimes

The latest edition of my Polaris People column is online over at the Polaris Music Prize website.

In this edition we check out some of the 2012 Best Song lists from various publications, learn about Grimes and bingo, worry about Weeknd‘s smolder problem, and behold Japandroids continuing world dominance.

To read this week’s column, go here.

Additionally, I also recently created the first official Polaris Music Prize gift guide, which predominantly features books written by members of the Polaris jury. I know many of these authors personally and have read many of the books they’ve written and give all of these people gold star thumbs up recommendations. And besides, if people don’t support these folks what hope is there for the rest of us?
