There’s No LCBO Strike! Happy Victoria Day Long Weekend

LCBO Store

LCBO Store

One of the biggest stories in Ontario this week wasn’t about Toronto’s allegedly crackhead mayor Rob Ford, or the fundamentally sketchy behavior of two Conservative Senators Mike Duffy and Pamela Wallin, it was the serious-business worry about whether we’d be able to buy liquor over this Victoria Day long weekend. This, because the LCBO was poised to go on strike.

As such, Sarah wrote a couple stories about this phenomenon for Huffington Post Music Canada. The first takes us through all the stages of grief in realizing that you’re going to run out of booze, all set to mostly-Canadian music.

The second, written after the LCBO strike was averted, contemplates those same stages of grief, but hey, we don’t have to worry about it now, so let’s get shit-faced.

‘Oil Sands Karaoke’: The Secret Singing World Of Fort McMurray

Oil Sands Karaoke

Oil Sands Karaoke

People have a lot of preconceptions about the ground zero of the oil sands, Fort McMurray, Alberta. Like, that it’s an obscenely expensive city surrounded by gaping wounds in the earth filled with endless pits of toxic slurry. Then there are the workers in the patch, who, to be charitable, don’t have a reputation of cultural refinement.

So when Sarah found out about a documentary film called Oil Sands Karaoke, which investigates a fascinating little art bubble amidst this massive industry, she had to talk to some of the people involved.

To read her interview with director Charles Wilkinson and perhaps For McMurray’s only drag queen (and openly gay citizen) Iceis Rain, head over to Huffington Post Music Canada by clicking here.

Hot Docs Film ‘Alias’ Shows The Struggling Side Of Toronto Hip-Hop

Alias

Alias

One of our favourite events is the annual documentary film festival Hot Docs in Toronto.

This year Sarah went deep in her coverage of some of the films. Of particular interest was Alias, a film that followed some decidedly un-Drake rappers as they struggled to pursue their art.

The resulting story can be found over at Huffington Post Music Canada by clicking here.
