Where Are They Now? 20 Years After Alternative Broke

It was tough being a music fan when “alternative” broke. Suddenly everyone thought The Smiths were their band and Soundgarden were considered as good as Black Sabbath. Worse, if you brought your hot new Nirvana Nevermind cassettes to house parties you’d get them stolen. Twice. Fuck you anonymous Nevermind cassette stealers.

Anyway, it was with that wealth of knowledge and experience that I wrote the story Where Are They Now? 20 Years After Alternative Broke for Spinner. In said story you can find helpful updates on the likes of L7, NIN, Blur, Pearl Jam and all those other faves of Gen Xers.

The Imaginary Shins-Decemberists-Sleater-Kinney Portlandia Supergroup

The members of Echo Echo

The members of Echo Echo

UPDATE: Because Spinner is RIP, we’ve unearthed this story here.

There’s a supergroup called Echo Echo featuring members of The Shins, The Decemberists, and Sleater-Kinney that kinda exists, but only in the fake world of the indie comedy show Portlandia.

Aaron was interviewing The Shins’ main main James Mercer about his band’s forthcoming album Port Of Morrow and he talked about being part of the fake Portlandia band.

You can read what Mercer said by heading over to Spinner and clicking here.

Alternative Then And Now: Current Bands And Their Descendents

Pearl Jam and Arcade Fire

Pearl Jam and Arcade Fire

Everything old is new again. Or something like that. And everything in music has been done before.

And if you’ve got a big enough record collection, you can actually trace the genelogical lines between artists a couple decades remove. Which is exactly what Aaron did in an article called Alt-Rock Then And Now: Connecting The Classes Of 1992 And 2012.

The story is exactly what it sounds like. Massive Attack were compared to The Weeknd, Pearl Jam to Arcade Fire, Jesus And Mary Chain to Crocodiles, etc., etc.

Six Extremely Detailed Descriptions Of Rock Musicals We’d Like To See

Scenes From American Idiot, The Musical

Scenes From American Idiot, The Musical

There’s been a lot of talk in the Risky Fuel household over the years about things like Pippin, Cabaret, and Hair. All of it by Sarah.

She’s moderately obsessed with musicals and has crafted a number of fake ones in her head. It would seem the enablers at AUX TV thought it would be cute to set her loose and reveal some of these ideas. The result: storylines for musicals about Bon Jovi, Arcade Fire, Rush, The Dandy Warhols and Brian Jonestown Massacre, Joel Plaskett, and the topper, a gay love triangle called Heavy Metal: The Musical set to Judas Priest songs.

You can read all about said musicals by clicking here.

How Kidz Bop De-Pervertizes Katy Perry Lyrics

Kidz Bop 21 is free of ANYTHING that would scare your kids

Kidz Bop 21 is free of ANYTHING that would scare your kids

There’s a thing called the Kidz Bop series and it’s a really big deal. Basically, producers get a bunch of next generation Disney kids together and they sing reworked versions of popular Top 40 radio hits with all the sex, drugs, violence, innuendo, negativity, religion, and any other potentially controversial language smoothed out of the songs and usually replaced with the words “dance” or “dance, yeah!”

Sarah spent an unnaturally long time listening to the kidz-ified versions of songs by LMFAO, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Maroon 5, Rihanna and a pile of others on the recently released Kidz Bop 21. She then compared the kidz versions to the originals to find out how youth-friendly they’ve been made.

You can read about her results over at the AOL Music Blog by clicking here.
