Police car flipped during the Montreal Gn'R riot.

Police car flipped during the Montreal Gn’R riot.

My “This Week In Music History” feature went out again this week over at the Spinner.

The riot that Guns n’ Roses caused in Montreal was a big deal. So was The Beatles releasing the Revolver album. Garth Brooks drew a million fans to a show.

The Story Of When Dallas Green Didn’t Meet Neil Young

Dallas Green

Dallas Green

Neil Young was a big deal at the Juno Awards in 2011. He won stuff and hung out and everybody was Neil Neil Neil!

I got within 10 feet of him or so myself, so it was pretty cool. Didn’t get to talk to him though. If I did I would have asked him if he watches Top Gear.

Anyway, there was someone else who didn’t talk to him either — City And Colour‘s Dallas Green. Thing is, Green sung one of Young’s songs (“Old Man”), on the award show broadcast, so that was a whole different level of Neil interaction.

I asked him about it for Huffington Post Music Canada.

Austra’s Night At The Opera

Austra

Austra

Electro dance goths Austra have a secret ace in their hole — singer Katie Stelmanis has some opera training. Which she basically uses to help bring her melodramatic beats and pulses to the public.

She told me all about her opera connection in an interview for Spinner.

The Shins Bring Back Reel-To-Reel

The Shins

The Shins

People are pretty hot on the revival of vinyl records, but The Shins are bringing back a different recording medium — reel-to-reel tape.

Shins leader James Mercer explained all about the band’s reel-to-reel release of their recent album Port of Morrow.

Why’d they do it? Basically because it’s neat.

SARSstock

SARSstock

My “This Week In Music History” feature went out again this week over at the Spinner.

Remember how SARS was a big thing like 10 years ago and then the Rolling Stones held a concert and it was like, dusts of hands, our work here is done. This was also the week that Bob Dylan disappeared/hurt himself in a motorcycle accident, and John Lennon called the Beatles bigger than Jesus.
