This Week In Music History — May 20 – 26

John Lennon and Yoko Ono

John Lennon and Yoko Ono

My “This Week In Music History” feature went out again this week over at the Spinner.

Interestingly, it was this very week 33 years ago that John Lennon and Yoko Ono holed up in Montreal to have a bed-in for peace, and to create the song “Give Peace A Chance.” Contrast that to the provincial government trying to clamp down on student protests in Montreal lately. Also, Bobby Dylan was born.

Spinner News Mega-Pack: MMVAs, Maylee Todd, Arcade Fire, Divine Fits, Feist

Arcade Fire red patched with Mick Jagger

Arcade Fire red patched with Mick Jagger

Here’s the latest batch of news stories I’ve done for the Spinner AOL empire:

Disco funk weirdo Maylee Todd gets profiled in a Red Bull documentary.

Feist has re-released her “lostMonarch: Lay Your Jewelled Head Down album on vinyl.

The MuchMusic Video Awards will feature performances by Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen and Nelly Furtado. In related news, I believe I have been aged out of what used to be the best party of the year.

Divine Fits exist. Which is only a big deal if you really cared about Handsome Furs.

Arcade Fire use Saturday Night Live to show support for Quebec student protests. Fight the power.

World Goth Day Special! How Goth Are Skrillex, Grimes, Trust, Paramore And A Bunch More?

Florence of the Machine and Katie Stelmanis of Austra

Florence of the Machine and Katie Stelmanis of Austra

It’s World Goth Day.

Because we enjoy darkness we enlisted Encyclopedia Gothica author Liisa Ladouceur to answer the question “How goth is X?” about a bunch of bands.

Among them: Paramore, Skrillex, Austra, Florence And The Machine and Crystal Castles.

Chairlift Don’t Like The Thompson Twins

Chairlift

Chairlift

Hipster Brooklyn band Chairlift don’t like the Thompson Twins.

We can’t really blame them. After all, TT defined all that was dorky about ’80s synth pop.

But maybe Chairlift doth protest too much. Because they sure sound like the ’80s.

Anyway, Sarah talked to them for Spinner. Click here to read the story.

This Week In Music History — May 13 – May 19

Ian Curtis' Grave

Ian Curtis’ Grave

My “This Week In Music History” feature went out again this week over at the Spinner.

This one’s an ugly reminder that Joy Division‘s Ian Curtis is dead. It sucks because Joy Division remain better than most bands. There’s also a similar bummer trip about Frank Sinatra and one that’s half-bummer about Tom Petty.
