This Week In Music History (January 27 – February 2)

Beatles on the roof

Beatles on the roof

My latest “This Week In Music History” feature went out again this week over at the Spinner.

In this edition we celebrate the Beatles last live performance ever… on a rooftop, remember that time Michael Jackson‘s hair caught on fire, and lament The White Stripes packing it in.

10 Great Musicians Turned Models

Great Lake Swimmers' Tony Dekker

Great Lake Swimmers’ Tony Dekker

Let’s be frank. There aren’t many famous musicians who are ugly. Usually being easy on the eyes is one of the baseline steps in being successful on stage.

So it’s not particularly surprising so many musicians also sideline hawking products as models. One slightly unusual addition to this list is Tony Dekker of Great Lake Swimmers. Now, we’re not saying he’s ugly, but his beardo-ness basically makes him look like every bartender in Parkdale.

Using him as inspiration, though, Sarah tracked down 10 other great musicians turned models for Spinner.

You can read the list by going here.

Proof! David Bowie Is A Time Lord

David Bowie

David Bowie

When you look at it closely — at the expense of the regular work you’re supposed to be doing — it’s pretty obvious the Thin White Duke, David Bowie, isn’t actually an earthling at all. Rather, he’s from Gallifray. A Time Lord. Just like Doctor Who.

My Spinner colleague Cameron Matthews and I came to this determination recently and compiled our proof into an article called “David Bowie & Doctor Who: Proof That the Thin White Duke Is a Time Lord.”

The latest edition of my Polaris People column is online over at the Polaris Music Prize website.

This week we got to make a rare mention of The Deadly Snakes, got some insight about Julie Doiron, and beheld Radio Radio breaking new ground — pro-breastfeeding booty-rap videos.
