Michael Cohl: Super-Promoter Talks Rolling Stones, Spider-Man

Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones

Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones

Leading up to this year’s Canadian Music Week I got the chance to speak to concert super-promoter Michael Cohl, the man behind tours for the likes of Michael Jackson, U2 and The Who.

We talked a bunch about his early days adventures in Toronto (including The Rolling Stones‘ El Mocambo club show) and his most recent success, the turnaround of Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark.

To read the interview head over to Huffington Post Music Canada here.

R.I.P. Jason Molina

Jason Molina

Jason Molina

On March 16 the man who we named this site after, Jason Molina, leader of Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co, passed away due to organ failure.

It’s been a pretty huge bummer to the Risky Fuel household considering the many, many hours we’ve spent with his music over the years.

I wrote an obituary on Molina which you can find over at Spinner. For one that’s a little deeper and more meaningful, do consider checking out our sister site Awesometism.

Stompin’ Tom Connors: Punk Rock Hero

Stompin' Tom Connors postage stamp

When Canadian country hero Stompin’ Tom Connors died earlier this week one of the subsequent discussions was about how Tom fearlessly did what he wanted. For someone who created folkie songs about ketchup, hockey and potatoes, he was essentially… a true punk.

As such, I wrote about the life lesson I learned the one time I had the opportunity  to spend a day drinking in the Connors’ family rec room. The story, called “Stompin’ Tom Connors Was More Punk Than You: A Memorial,” can be found here.

In related Tom tributes, over at my other workplace the Polaris Music Prize I also wrote an article collecting the many tweets from various past Polaris nominees who were also touched by Tom’s music. You can read that article here.
