This Week In Music History — May 27 – June 2

Jeff Buckley

Jeff Buckley

My “This Week In Music History” feature went out again this week over at the Spinner.

Jeff Buckley died this week 15 years ago. That tends to make people sad. I prefer his father Tim, myself. Also celebrating an anniversary this week, the great Franz Ferdinand spy scandal… where Russian authorities thought lead singer Alex Kapranos was an international spy. Oh, and almost 50 years ago this week 11 students were suspended from school for having hair like Jagger, hair like Jagger.

Carrie Underwood Says Ottawa Hockey Fans Don’t Hate Her Anymore

Former Ottawa Senator Mike Fisher and Carrie Underwood

Former Ottawa Senator Mike Fisher and Carrie Underwood

If you follow hockey you know that two seasons ago the Ottawa Senators dismantled their hockey team to begin a rebuild. Chief amongst those moves was trading heart and soul player Mike Fisher to the Nashville Predators.

The move worked — Ottawa was a better team last year. Thing is, Nashville became a much better team, and made a quality run in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

An aside to all this is that many Senators fans considered Fisher’s wife, country superstar Carrie Underwood, as some sort of Yoko Ono who has some part in breaking up the band.

Sarah talked to Underwood about the whole thing and the singer says she and Ottawa have made peace.

This Week In Music History — May 20 – 26

John Lennon and Yoko Ono

John Lennon and Yoko Ono

My “This Week In Music History” feature went out again this week over at the Spinner.

Interestingly, it was this very week 33 years ago that John Lennon and Yoko Ono holed up in Montreal to have a bed-in for peace, and to create the song “Give Peace A Chance.” Contrast that to the provincial government trying to clamp down on student protests in Montreal lately. Also, Bobby Dylan was born.
