YAMANTAKA // SONIC TITAN’S Threatening Performance

YAMANTAKA // SONIC TITAN

YAMANTAKA // SONIC TITAN

One of the most intriguing and least well-known contenders for the now-decided Polaris Music Prize was the kabuki theater heavy metal project YAMANTAKA // SONIC TITAN.

The band (who prefer to be considered an art collective) use elaborate Asian-themed costumes and props in their pummeling live shows and I got a chance to talk to them about said shows.

Arcade Fire, K’naan Played A Charity Show In Toronto For Eric The Vampire

Arcade Fire

Arcade Fire

To coincide with TIFF 2012 the Arcade Fire, K’naan, Raine Maida and Chantal Kreviazuk performed at a fancy charity show to help Haiti put on by a group called Artists For Peace And Justice.

The party was filled with A-listers like Jude Law and Eric the vampire (Alexander Skarsgard).

Sarah was there. And when she wasn’t somehow constantly running afoul of Paul Haggis (dude, you’re not that important) she managed to write about it for Spinner.

Boots And Hearts And Rain And Country Music

Carrie Underwood & Tim McGraw

Carrie Underwood & Tim McGraw

Sarah spent last weekend in the rain and mud and relative wilderness of the inaugural Boots And Hearts country music festival in Bowmanville, Ontario.

The festival, which is aiming to become a sort of Bonnaroo for new country, had a pile of big names like Carrie Underwood, Kid Rock and Tim McGraw perform across its three days.

It also had non-stop rain, mud and front loading tractors driving through the middle of the audience (you have to backtrack through Sarah’s twitter account at @fodderfigure to see some of this stuff… it was kind of an Apocalypse Now adventure).

Anyway, she also wrote an official recap of the fest which you can read over at The Boot by clicking here.

The Story Of When Dallas Green Didn’t Meet Neil Young

Dallas Green

Dallas Green

Neil Young was a big deal at the Juno Awards in 2011. He won stuff and hung out and everybody was Neil Neil Neil!

I got within 10 feet of him or so myself, so it was pretty cool. Didn’t get to talk to him though. If I did I would have asked him if he watches Top Gear.

Anyway, there was someone else who didn’t talk to him either — City And Colour‘s Dallas Green. Thing is, Green sung one of Young’s songs (“Old Man”), on the award show broadcast, so that was a whole different level of Neil interaction.

I asked him about it for Huffington Post Music Canada.

Remembering Lollapalooza 1991

Lollapalooza 1991

Lollapalooza 1991

If you grew of age musically in the “alternative” era just like I did, you probably consider Lollapalooza a pretty big deal.

And that would be because it WAS a big deal.

It turns out the 21st anniversary of the first ever Lollapalooza show happened a couple days ago, so I put together a wee gallery over at Spinner to celebrate.
