This Week In Music History: August 16 – September 1

Liam Gallagher of Oasis

Liam Gallagher of Oasis

My “This Week In Music History” feature went out again this week over at the Spinner.

For anyone who had floppy hair and thinks they’re British it was a week to celebrate the debut of OasisDefinitely Maybe album. To guitar geeks it was the week Stevie Ray Vaughan died. And to Elvis fans it was the week that someone almost successfully dug up and stole his dead body.

When Elijah Wood Was A Beastie Boy

Elijah Wood

Elijah Wood

Remember that epic half-hour Beastie Boys video for “Fight For Your Right (Revisited)”?

There was hooliganism, Will Arnett getting hit with a flying beer, and a literal pissing contest… man, it was great stuff.

One of the principal actors in the video was Elijah Wood and Sarah spoke to him recently about it for Spinner.

Basically Wood called it one of the best experiences of his life.

16 Things Morrissey Hates

Morrissey

Morrissey

UPDATE: Because Spinner is RIP I’ve unearthed this listicle at the following location.

As the (proud?) owner of over 50 Morrissey and The Smiths CDs, and as someone who qualifies as at least two different things that Morrissey loathes (being Canadian and a music journalist), I felt I was uniquely qualified to mine the depths of the Mozzer’s hatescape to create the feature “16 Things Morrissey Hates” for Spinner.

Lady Gaga & Aaliyah

Lady Gaga & Aaliyah

My “This Week In Music History” feature went out again this week over at the Spinner.

It was this week in 2008 when Lady Gaga first introduced herself to us with her debut album. Joe Strummer of The Clash was also introduced to the world in a literal sense — it was his birthday. Oh, and Aaliyah died.
