This Week In Music History: September 16 – 22 — The Crime Edition

Jim Morrison & Willie Nelson

Jim Morrison & Willie Nelson

My “This Week In Music History” feature went out again this week over at the Spinner.

For this edition I focused strictly on past crimes musicians were involved in and there were some truly rich ones. Jim Morrison of The Doors redefined the term “lizard king” and Willie Nelson got busted.

Kathleen Edwards: Cool Kids Party Crasher

Kathleen Edwards

Kathleen Edwards

Awhile back I spoke to a bunch of the 2012 Polaris Music Prize short list nominees and considering the Polaris Gala to determine the winner is happening on September 24, now’s a good time to launch these things upon the world.

The first, which I did for Spinner, is about singer Kathleen Edwards. She figures she’s crashing the cool kids party by being a Polaris nominee. We hope she pranks some people while she’s there.

This Isn’t War Between Elijah Wood And Jared Leto

Elijah Wood & Jared Leto

Elijah Wood & Jared Leto

UPDATE: Because Spinner is RIP we’ve unearthed this story in full here.

Risky Fuel personally knows no less than three people who ran afoul of 30 Seconds To Mars frontman Jared Leto being (we’ll refer to it charitably) “difficult” on three separate occasions. And the way these things go, once is an off day, but three times? That’s a pattern.

So it was with some mischievous enthusiasm that when Sarah spoke to actor Elijah Wood she got a status update on the running feud that has existed between Frodo and Jordan Catalano for half a decade.

As it turns out, there’s no hard feelings or ill will anymore. On Woods’ side, at least.

Mystery Machine Make Their Return

Mystery Machine

Mystery Machine

Under-appreciated ’90s British Columbian shoegazers Mystery Machine recently released Western Magnetics, their first album in 14 years. For anyone who had a campus radio show back in the day the slicing noise rock of it will be comfortingly familiar.

I spoke to the MM guys about their coming out of hibernation for Spinner.

Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash

My “This Week In Music History” feature went out again this week over at the Spinner.

This latest one was a bit of a bummer trip because we looked at when Johnny Cash and Johnny Ramone died.
