When Pop Stars Go Goth (Katy Perry, Madonna, Christina Aguilera)

Katy Perry

Pretty much every successful musician has a “dark” period, which often results in some of their best music.

For a certain segment of pop starlets, however, their dark periods are more often characterized not by dark music, but by dark clothes.

This phenomenon of pop-ettes “going goth” isn’t a new one and Sarah collected some examples of this game of gloomy dress-up for AOL Music Blog.

Chairlift Don’t Like The Thompson Twins

Chairlift

Chairlift

Hipster Brooklyn band Chairlift don’t like the Thompson Twins.

We can’t really blame them. After all, TT defined all that was dorky about ’80s synth pop.

But maybe Chairlift doth protest too much. Because they sure sound like the ’80s.

Anyway, Sarah talked to them for Spinner. Click here to read the story.

This Week In Music History — May 13 – May 19

Ian Curtis' Grave

Ian Curtis’ Grave

My “This Week In Music History” feature went out again this week over at the Spinner.

This one’s an ugly reminder that Joy Division‘s Ian Curtis is dead. It sucks because Joy Division remain better than most bands. There’s also a similar bummer trip about Frank Sinatra and one that’s half-bummer about Tom Petty.

To find out more details of why these things and more made music history, click here.
