Hot-Blooded Girls And The Man From U.N.C.L.E.’s Illya Kuryakin

The return of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. franchise has been a mixed blessing in the Risky Fuel household.

Particularly because one half of Team Fuel (Sarah) has a deep, borderline “problem” level crush on the original television show’s thoughtful, mysterious Russian spy character Illya Kuryakin, who was played by David McCallum.

In the film reboot Kuryakin is entirely different, a musclebound lurch played by Armie Hammer.

Sarah’s having a hard time accepting the new version of Illya, which may be putting her at odds with a whole new generation of U.N.C.L.E. fans.

She wrote about this quandary in her first piece for The A.V. Club.

Fighting Styles Of The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

The second piece from Sarah’s The Man From U.N.C.L.E. quadrilogy from the last week or so was an analysis of the fighting techniques used by the spies in the U.N.C.L.E. film and television show.

What she learned was that the original Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin had a bit of Royce Gracie-like flair to their combat skills.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Reboot Not For Fans Of The Original

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. rebooted

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. rebooted

The Risky Fuel household is many things. Among them: It’s the safe harbour for one superfan of the 1960s spy TV series The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

And so it was with much trepidation that our Sarah undertook reviewing the new Guy Ritchie-led film adaptation of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. for Consequence Of Sound.

Her conclusion? It’s probably not a movie for fans of the original.

Roddy Piper Remembered

Roddy Piper

Roddy Piper

When pro wrestler/actor/entertainer Roddy Piper died on July 31 it sent a whole world who grew up on his moral grey area villainy in mourning.

He was, after all, The Joker to Hulk Hogan’s Batman, a villain in name, but more like a yin to Hogan’s yang. In hindsight he was also a was more rich and awesome character than the titular head of Hulkamania.

Sarah wrote a eulogy about Piper explaining this truth and more for Fightland.

Christopher Meloni’s Wet Hot Martial Arts

Christopher Meloni in Wet Hot American Summer: First Day Of Camp

Christopher Meloni has reprised his role as Gene, the PTSD-afflicted camp cook, for Netflix’s Wet Hot American Summer: First Day Of Camp.

Because Sarah is a big fan of Meloni’s work she used this as an excuse to write about the history of his martial arts training for Fightland.

Oh, and she also talked about Meloni’s appearance in the prison drama OZ.
